Electric co-ops support responsible development of cost effective renewable resources as a means to provide safe, reliable power for their members at affordable rates. Currently more than 750 systems, nearly 90% of all systems offer their members a green power option. In most cases, the renewable energy is purchased from their generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative, or other power supplier, for resale to ultimate consumers. Most co-op owned renewable generating capacity is powered by wind or biomass.

As NRECA CEO Glenn English states," Co-ops have, for more than a decade, been strong proponents of increased integration of renewable fuels into our nation’s energy supply. We support an achievable goal that will, once realized, increase national security by reducing dependence on foreign oil, foster economic opportunity, and reduce our impact on the environment."
