ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA, April 24, 2009 – The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) is bringing together cooperatives and their research partners for a “Carbon Capture and Utilization Symposium” on April 30 in Arlington from 8:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.
Seven generation and transmission cooperatives (G&Ts) are currently partnering with universities, laboratories and research firms to explore methods for capturing and utilizing carbon emissions from existing fossil power plants. The symposium provides an opportunity for cooperative staff and researchers to share their knowledge and experience and consider new research initiatives.
Three cooperative projects are investigating different chemical processes to capture carbon from the fossil plant stream of flue gases: chilled ammonia, aqueous ammonia, and amines like Monoethanolamine or MEA, among others. Three cooperatives are researching the use of algae to capture CO2 with their respective universities, laboratories, and research firms.
One example: Basin Electric Power Cooperative and the University of North Dakota’s Energy Environmental Research Center (EERC) are researching the impact of retrofitting a power plant with either a post combustion conventional MEA carbon capture system or retrofitting an oxy-fuel combustion system to produce high concentration of carbon dioxide for disposal.
Symposium presentations will focus on a practical engineering evaluation of the most promising technologies.
