Arlington, Virginia, October, 2009 –The Washingtonian magazine has named the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) one of the Washington metropolitan region’s fifty best places to work.

This year marks the sixth year the magazine has conducted the survey, reviewing more than 200 companies and 13,000 employee surveys. The final determinations rely heavily on the scores given by a company's employees.

"Washington is a great city and, sometimes, a stressful place to live. At NRECA, we help employees find and keep a healthy balance, offering alternative work arrangements, health screenings and community outreach,” explained Paul Hvidding, VP for Human Resources.

NRECA’s turnover rates reflect the success of this approach: over ten years, the association’s turnover rate, including retirements, averaged only 12 percent.

The Washingtonian panel looked at pay and benefits, whether the work is challenging and interesting, the work-life balance, whether employees are given opportunities to learn and grow, financial stability, commitment to charity and community, and the recognition and respect given employees.

“We pay attention to the whole person and try to foster an environment that allows people to thrive,” Hvidding said.

Also this year, NRECA was ranked fifth in AARP’s “2009 Best Employers for Workers Over Fifty” and ComputerWorld’s “Best Places to Work in IT.”

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is the national service organization that represents the nation’s more than 900 private, not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide service to 42 million people in 47 states.
