Arlington, Virginia, December 5, 2007 – NRECA’s new building located at 4401 Wilson Boulevard was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certificate from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The building is one of nine LEED-certified buildings in Arlington County under the County’s Green Building Incentive program.
Tom Mawson, executive director of (USGBC) presented the Certificate to Jack Wolfe, president of the NRECA Board of Directors at NRECA’s headquarters located next door to the new building. NRECA also received a plaque from Arlington County Board Chairman Paul Ferguson for its participation in the County program.
“NRECA is ahead of the curve,” said Ferguson, noting that even before the county’s program had been established, NRECA had included many of the same energy efficiency features in the association’s headquarters building.
Glenn English, CEO of NRECA, cited NRECA’s desire to be a good corporate citizen of Arlington County, as well as the efficiency and cost benefits of a LEED-certified building. “We believe our new building can serve as a showcase for the County to promote the Green Building Incentive program.”
The NRECA building, which was completed in 2007, meets stringent design criteria. Some special features include the following: a design to reduce heat islands; the use of chlorine and CFC-free refrigerant; high-performance efficient glass, lighting, HVAC systems, and energy monitoring equipment; water-efficient fixtures; 23 percent recycled-content materials; and underground tanks to store rainwater used to irrigate the site’s landscaping.
Fifty percent of the building materials were manufactured within 500 miles of the site; 43 percent of the total building material has been manufactured using stock harvested, extracted or recovered within 500 miles of the site. The building is also located at the Ballston Metro stop, offering several alternative transit options to building occupants.
In return for its investment in efficiency, NRECA received bonus density, allowing the Association to increase the height of the building. The building is one of the first projects in Arlington to benefit from the County's nationally recognized green building density incentive program, which encourages private developers to building environmentally responsible buildings.
NRECA is the national service organization that represents the nation’s more than 900 private, not-for-profit, consumer-owned electric cooperatives, which provide service to 40 million people in 47 states.
