On September 11, 2001, Flight 93 crashed through the powerlines belonging to Somerset Rural Electric Cooperative and into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Donna Glessner, a member of Somerset REC organized the first living flag in Shanksville on July 4, 2002.
In 2011, the Pennsylvania chapter of the National Association of Postmasters of the United States of America (NAPUSA) organized another living flag. About half of the 273 people clad in red, white or blue are affiliated with NAPUSA; the other half are area residents who were invited to help.
Dave Breen, local photographer requested Somerset Rural Electric assist with a bucket truck. Chief lineworker Roy Bittner and lineworker Brian Marker assisted Breen and videographer Mike Velmar in getting great aerial shots.
